A maximum field of athletes pounded the trails of Heartwood Forest and Nomansland Common for the St Albans Stampede Ultra-Marathon event.

A total of 250 runners tackled the 12-hour endurance event, part-organised by St Albans Striders.

The event, which has grown in popularity since its conception in 2015, challenges participants to run as many miles as they can over the 12-hour period.

Runners can pick to run it relay style in teams or pairs, or go it solo.

One Strider, Paul Adams, clocked up an astonishing 76 miles to place as the first male while Kate Bennett was the first female, having covered 64 miles.

St Albans Striders also saw wins across multiple other categories, including the open team who were the overall mileage winners.

That included Freya Waddell, Tom Stoyer, Jake Butterfield and Barnaby Walker.

Waddell also won the overall female fastest lap.

The first female team of four consisted of Striders Emily Hickey-Baird, Eleanor Lambert, Laura
Mitchell and Carla Moseley.

The fastest male Pair were Matthew Nicholson and Chris Dennell, the fastest open category pair Claire and Nick Buttenshaw, and the fastest open team of eight were also all Striders.

That was Kate Dixon, Tom Croft, Martin Healey, Bethany Hopla, Lily Seach, Errol Maginley, Jenny Maginley and Gavin Clifton.

Other winning teams included the fastest female team of eight, won by Tanya Wallman, Joanne Davies, Lynne Miles, Charlotte Acton, Claire Price, Lara Menzies and Tessa Whitmore.

The first mixed team of four were Heather Hann, Lucy Waterlow, James Pickett and Ian Bryson.

The last laps saw participants navigating the tricky trails in the dark, keen to pass the finish line before the timer hit 9pm as otherwise the last lap of four miles would not count.
