Phoebe Gill's last big event prior to her Olympic debut was in very familiar surroundings - her home track of St Albans.

The St Albans Athletics Club star has captured the attention of the British public thanks to her superb 800m run in the British Championships, earning her selection for the Paris 2024 event.

But before departing she was doing what she loves best, running with team-mates as AC hosted the third round of the Southern Athletics League at Westminster Lodge.

And just to prove why she is going to the big show, not that it was needed, she took almost a second off her 400m PB in a time of 53.3 seconds.

The day as a whole was a superb example of the talent throughout the club, with a great atmosphere around the track.

Luke Carlin opened the proceedings with a convincing win in the 400m hurdles, closely followed by wins in the 800m for Andrew Shaw & Keira Stern.

Sedona De Silva set a PB in the 200m while Hannah Burkhardt, part of sister club St Albans Striders, won the 3,000m.

And there was plenty of successes in the field too.

Ben Taylor and Liam Powell set new PBs in the long jump, the first event in memory where both the A and B athletes jumped over six metres.

Joe Hirst landed, literally, 15 minutes before the start of the javelin having just arrived at Luton Airport.

He was second in the A event while Michael Barrett took the B win.

Nick Walker and Louise Kelley took on four events each to secure important points, alongside Sophie Jacobs and Sarah McGrath who both placed second in the respective A and B 1500m runs.

The relays closed the day with a third place in the 4x100m for the men, although the young ladies team were unfortunately disqualified for a lane infringement.

In the 4x400m, the men's team of Adam, Andrew, Rhys and Sam took nearly 10 seconds off the club record, setting a new SAL Division Two record in the process with their 3:22.3 time.

Gill joined Emeline Brown, Mio Evans and Stern for the women's event, lapping the back of the field on their way to victory.

Overall, St Albans took a deserved second place, having chased Dacorum all day.

The final match of the season takes place in Hemel Hempstead in August.
