Rising star Phoebe Gill’s qualification for the Olympic Games has been confirmed after Team TB announced their athletics squad for Paris 2024.
The 17-year-old St Albans Athletics Club member was already assured of her place on the biggest stage in global sport after a stunning performance saw her win the 800m at the UK Athletics Championships on Sunday.
It has now been officially announced that Gill will be one of three Great Britain representatives in the two-lap event, alongside Olympic medallist Keely Hodgkinson and Jemma Reekie, who the Harpenden St George’s athlete beat into second place in Manchester.
“It means the world to me,” Gill said after qualifying for the Olympics. “It is a dream come true. I can’t believe it. I was not expecting that at all.
“Having Jemma on my shoulder, someone I’ve looked up to so much, was such an amazing thing and we just used each other to get to the line.”
Team GB Chef de Mission Mark England said: “The Games are within touching distance now and I am delighted to welcome a hugely talented and exciting track and field squad to Team GB today.
“The group boasts a very strong mix of Olympic, World and European medallists. I am confident that their experience will a source of inspiration and support not only to the 35 debutants who have also made the team, but to the wider Team GB too.
“Athletics fans were treated to some outstanding breakthrough performances at the British Championships in Manchester last week which has given us a glimpse of what we can expect next month in Paris.”
