A St Albans swimmer has been chosen to represent Great Britain in the upcoming World Deaf Swimming Championships.

The event will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Monday, August 14, until Saturday, August 19.

Twenty-year-old Lucy Jordan-Caws - who was formerly a pupil at St Albans Girls’ School and Heathlands School - has been selected.

Lucy has been deaf since birth and attends swimming training at Verulam Swimming Club.

Being a sports, health and exercise sciences student at the University of Birmingham, Lucy also attends her university's swimming club and wakes up at 5.30am three times a week to train.

She swims for two hours each session before lectures, and also travels to attend deaf swimming events and training camps.

Lucy first represented her country in the 2018 European Deaf Swimming Championships in Lublin, Poland.

She said: “I am really looking forwards to representing Great Britain again and competing against the highest standards in Deaf Swimming.

"I have faced some challenges this season, including being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two months ago, so I had to adapt to a new normal with ensuring my blood glucose levels are in range and that I am giving myself the correct amount of insulin.

"However, I am determined to bring back some good results to reflect how hard I have been working with my coaches.”
