Verulam Golf Club scratch team captain David Dobinson narrowly missed out on lifting the Herts Salver after losing a sudden death play-off.
Dobinson carded five birdies at Aldenham Golf Club to finish one over par and level with Charlie Williams of Essendon, who dropped two shots on the last hole.
The play-off took place on the first hole, a tough 426 yard dogleg left par four.
Williams won the toss to go first and pushed his tee shot right of the fairway with a rescue club. Dobinson failed to capitalise and pulled his drive into the bushes to the left of the fairway. Despite a brave attempt to recover, Williams two putted from five feet for a bogey to win the competition.
The top 16 gross scores returned on the day qualify through to the County Championship event at Hadley Wood next month, and all players on 75 (+5) or better qualified.
Next year’s Herts Salver event will be at Brookmans Park GC on Saturday, May 7.
