St Albans City Football legend Ivor Jones was buried yesterday (Wednesday) prompting many memories of his association with the foundation of the Herts Advertiser Sunday Football League at its start-up in 1961.

Ivor played for Gibbs & Bamforth, the printers in Spencer Street, in his first season and went on to play for a mainly teenage group of youngsters (Paupers on Sundays and Selby on Saturdays)

These two clubs reached the very highest standard just below St Albans City FC and won many trophies both Saturdays and Sundays.

Tony Lloyd, who played with Ivor for over 11 years as the goalkeeper to both teams, said he believed Ivor's nickname "Hot Shot" was because Tony never in all these years saw him miss a penalty.

Getting his signature to join a club was eagerly sought after hence he played for other teams including London Road Reserves, Fleas and The Peahen Hotel.

Ivor's wife Bess died six years ago and they leave their two sons Ben and Sam and four grandchildren Lola, Felix, George and Jessica.
