The Post Office has issued a strong response following heavy opposition to the news of its branches being franchised across the country - including the St Albans location.

Last week, St Peter's Street Post Office was spotted amid a long list of mailing branches to be franchised in company cuts and franchising plans.

Sky broke the news to the public and the politicians, leaving many in the dark as to whether there will be a consultation process or strategy behind the Post Office closures.

Local MP's and politicians, particularly in St Albans, have vocalised their concerns to parliament.

This includes considering the future of our remaining Directly Managed Branches (DMBs), which are loss-making.

"We have had long held a publicly-stated ambition to move to a fully franchised network and we are in dialogue with the unions about future options for the DMBs.”

The spokesperson ensured that the Post Office "do not plan to close these stores", but rather "franchise" them to one of their retail partners or to an independent postmaster.

MP Daisy Cooper has been at the forefront of protests, sending a letter to the Secretary of State and launching a public petition to prevent changes to the St Albans branch.

After a visit to the St Peter's Street shop this week the MP said: "I think many people are really angry about this announcement. It's a  valuable service and we often see queues of people right out the door and round the corner.

"We are absolutely clear we want to fight this tooth and nail, and the government should not be closing our Post Office."

The MP assured the St Albans community that alongside 30 other MPs, she will "fight tooth and nail" and ask questions in parliament over the coming weeks.
