To celebrate Guinness World Records Day 2024, we take a look at some of the best feats and achievements from the St Albans community that have made the coveted list.
First held in 2004 to mark Guinness World Records becoming the best-selling copyright book of all time, Guinness World Records Day is now an annual celebration that has inspired some iconic record-breaking achievements.
Find out five of the best records broken in St Albans below:
1. Most people performing a signed nursery rhyme in sign language
Three years ago (2021) staff and pupils at Heathlands School For Deaf Children in St Albans broke the record for the most people performing a signed nursery rhyme in sign language with 242 making the effort on September 24, 2021.
The participants signed the rhyme, 'I can sign a rainbow.'
2. Most 2.5 hook yo-yo tricks in 30 seconds
The most 2.5 hook yo-yo tricks in 30 seconds is 21 and this was achieved by Marcus Osborne on CBBC's Officially Amazing on September 2, 2017.
3. Most songs on a digital album
Mark Christopher Lee and The Pocket Gods achieved the record for the most songs on a digital album, making 1,000 songs.
This was achieved in on February 10, 2022.
The Pocket Gods have held this record title on and off since 2015.
They added: "We want this record to stand till the end of time or set a really hard challenge for any artists out there! We also hold the record for most studio albums released digitally and are in the process of waiting for the world's longest song which we have held previously."
At the time, Mark Lee said: "I've suffered from mental health issues and have a disability and this is proof that if anyone can achieve whatever they want with passion and focus and belief!"
4. Largest rose garden in the UK
Since January 2001, The Royal National Rose Society's Gardens of the Rose at St Albans held the record for the largest rose garden in the UK.
The former agricultural tourist attraction featured 30,000 roses and over 1,700 different varieties.
Unfortunately Gardens of the Rose closed in 2017 and was later put on the market.
5. Most weight squat lifted in 24 hours (team)
St Albans Weightlifting Club and Ware Boys Club went for this weightlifting record between July 20 and 21, 1986.
The squat record for timed lifts became 2,168,625kg (4,780,994lb) and was set by a 10-man team from across Herts.
