The latest twist to the Verulamium track is a positive one, with organisers of the St Albans Half Marathon, ATW, stepping in to help reach the £1.2 million target.

ATW have teamed up with the track's owners Abbey View Community Athletics Track (AVCAT) to donate £1 from every Half Marathon, 10k, 5k and Fun Run participant in 2025 to the course.

Last year, council funding for the Westminster Lodge Athletics tracks was cut and the track and pavilion was closed to the public, leaving its future in jeopardy.

At the time, "the current financial climate" was cited by St Albans City and District Council (SADC) as the main reason for the closure

In April this year, the facility in Verulamium Park - owned by SADC - changed hands and is currently owned by AVCAT, a charity established by the St Albans Athletics Club.

The proceeds from all ATW events next year will go toward the £1.2m funding needed to keep the facility open for the community.

James Shipley, ATW managing director said “The St Albans Half Marathon is the largest running event in Hertfordshire and has always supported and raised funds for local charities.

"In 2025 we are proud to be able to support the running community while giving children a fantastic Fun Run experience."

Shipley described the course as a "superb asset" for St Albans as it is well known as one of the most scenic tracks in the country with views across Verulamium Park and the cathedral.

Hundreds of budding runners participate in athletics every week, including popular clubs such as the St Albans Striders, Athena and Special Olympics.

AVCAT also host public sessions for the community, in addition to school competitions in the summer.

Peter Poulain, chairman of the AVCAT charity, said: “Partnering with the St Albans Half Marathon will provide much needed funding and also give thousands of children a chance to experience running down the home straight of the track to finish their Fun Run."
