The beloved family board game MONOPOLY has released its very own St Albans edition today featuring the very best of the city's landmarks, charities and streets - just to name a few.

This morning, The Herts Advertiser was invited to The Odyssey to witness the game's official launch, accompanied by other well-regarded businesses and people from the city.

Among those guests, was Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Jamie Day,  who hopes the new board will "put St Albans on the map".

Landmarks and businesses got their flowers on the new board with St Albans Cathedral and the iconic Clock Tower replacing the original blue squares at the end of the board.

Kicking off the board are the game’s most affordable squares, the brown set, home to The Roman Theatre and Sopwell Nunnery.

In between, are the great and good of the city including St Albans Market, the Odyssey Cinema and Verulamium Park - in all, more than 30 St Albans landmarks and organisations feature in the game.

Chance and Community Chest cards are also customised - one sends players to the infamous MONOPOLY jail for speeding through Fishpool Street.

Ella Gibbs, custom games executive at Winning Moves UK, who produced this edition said they were "spoilt for choice" when creating the St Albans board as she introduced the famous Mr MONOPOLY.

“We produce official MONOPOLY games based on places all over the world, including in recent years Palm Beach, Dubai, Phuket and The Hamptons.

"Now St Albans has joined the world’s MONOPOLY elite!”.

At the ripe age of "93", the mascot danced and enjoyed handing out the new game - today locals should look out for the character in the city centre!

Bethany Nicholson, front of house manager, said: “We are thrilled to be featured, as well as be the chosen launch venue, for the new St Albans Monopoly board.

“We can’t wait to share this moment with other featured organisations and charities from St. Albans.”

The MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition hits the shops at 10am today, and will be available to purchase at Waterstones and WHSmith, as well as online at Booghe.co.uk or Amazon.co.uk.
