Permission is being sought to demolish 25 garages in St Albans, and build five new houses in their place.

Developers Smith Jenkins Planning and Heritage have submitted the plans on behalf of the district council, which hopes to build the new properties at the site of the Abbots Avenue West Railway Garages.

Each property would contain five bedrooms, with the homes intended to be used as social or affordable housing.

A planning statement submitted alongside the application reads: "The proposed dwellings are to be offered for general needs, social rent housing.

"The site is located within the Sopwell area of St Albans, within the built up area.

"The principle of development within this area of St Albans is generally acceptable where it meets other plans and proposals."

The plans have so far received four objections from neighbouring addresses.

One resident writes: "I am very concerned by the three houses that will be overlooking my house and garden. I have lived here for 25 years and I have never been so overlooked. "

The plans are open to the public and can be viewed and commented on until October 26.
