A vacant social club could be demolished as part of plans to build new five new homes on a road in St Albans.

Developers London Planning Services Ltd have submitted plans to the district council that would see five homes built on Waverly Road.

The application specifies that the project would create two three-bedroom homes and a pair of two-bedroom homes.

This would be facilitated by the demolition of the former Waverly Sports and Social Club site, a currently vacant building at 58 Waverly Road.

A letter accompanying the application reads: "This proposal is set to provide new dwellings, which will assist in the provision of new housing and help the council meet its housing targets, for which there is currently a serious under-provision.

"The development seeks to demolish the existing building and utilise the existing car park."

The three-bedroom homes would be constructed where the social club currently sits, while the trio of two-bedroom houses would lie at the rear of the development site.

The scheme also includes parking spaces for each of the homes.

The letter goes on to say: "The new layout of the development has been carefully planned to create a tidy, cohesive layout making a positive contribution to the local environment.

"The provision of well-designed, spacious homes with adequate parking and sustainable features will enhance the quality of life for future residents while respecting the heritage of the area."

Developers also argue that the scheme will "have a positive benefit on the local community".

Two public comments have been received at time of writing, one supporting the plans and another raising an objection.

Writing in support of the plans, a resident noted that the club is already part-demolished and indicated a support for the new homes.

Opposing the plans, another resident wrote: "The site has been left in an unsecured and unsafe state."

The plans can be viewed and commented on until October 12.
