Nonna's café and restaurant revamped its menu in April having been through plenty of changes over the last couple of years. Our reporter Liam Fitzpatrick headed down to give his verdict.

Harpenden isn't short of places to eat, so I was spoilt for choice on Wednesday evening when deciding where to go for a nice meal.

I'm a great lover of Mediterranean food, so my interest was piqued by Nonna's café and restaurant, an establishment based at 78 High Street that has undergone plenty of change over the last couple of years.

You may be a little confused by the name of the restaurant - after all, 'Nonna's' screams Italian, rather than Mediterranean cuisine.

This is because Nonna's began life down the road at 64 High Street as Nonno's Pizza.

The pizza shop remains, but in 2023, the owners moved in on the site vacated by the Gallery Rouge.

Initially, the new eatery was a Persian cuisine named Kohan.

But last October they opted for a rebrand to boost numbers through the door, using their established name to become Nonna's café and restaurant, opting for a more tried and tested Mediterranean theme.

For my starter I opted for mixed prawns cooked in a spicy garlic, white wine and tomato sauce.

As a self-professed prawn aficionado, I can be a harsh judge - but this bowl hit the spot. Some places can be rather stingy with the amount of prawns you actually get, creating an illusion with copious amounts of sauce.

But with Nonna's I got my money's worth - an ample amount of seafood, complemented perfectly by the sauce.

Being a non-drinker I was not swayed by the (admittedly impressive) list of house wines, instead plumping for tea, served elegantly on a rather cute tray.

The rice was solid, if not spectacular, but the chicken was sensational.

Of course, no meal at a place like this would be complete without the bread - a lovely basket that accompanied the meal.
