After Harpenden's Waffle House opened to rave reviews last week, reporter Liam Fitzpatrick headed down to see what all the fuss is about.

The Waffle House opened its Harpenden venue to little fanfare last week, simply opening its doors unannounced, with no marketing or social media presence.

Given the enduring popularity of the St Albans branch, this was a surprisingly understated arrival on Leyton Road, where it has replaced Italian chain Prezzo.

Owner Joe Gaze explains: "We decided on a “soft launch” to allow our team to settle and become comfortable in their new environment."

The strategy of relying on word of mouth appears to have paid off as the place was busy and buzzing when I visited on Wednesday morning (August 21), exactly one week after the opening.

The Waffle House do a range of sweet and savoury pancakes, allowing them to cater for all times of day.

"When the Prezzo closed  in the middle of 2023, we immediately took an interest in the premises due to its close proximity to the St Albans restaurant and the stunning location which had so much potential."

With this being mid-morning, it was a bit early for buttermilk chicken, pulled pork or chilli con carnie (all waffle toppings you can get as part of the lunch menu), but for me it's never too early for chocolate or a challenge, so I went for the ominously named 'Death by Chocolate'.

The plate consists of a waffle (of course), topped with light whipped chocolate mousse, chocolate brownie chunks and white chocolate shavings.

It was indulgent in the best possible way, washed down nicely with a lovely cup of hot chocolate.

The opening has been a hit with customers, as Greg explains: "We’re absolutely thrilled at the welcome we have received.

"Even before we opened, we noticed a fabulous buzz from locals walking past. We even received a handmade card from two young girls requesting a table on our first day of service.

"It’s wonderful that Harpenden locals have embraced us and all our team are excited by how friendly the town is.

"We wanted to ease our way into service without a huge fanfare, but news of our opening spread very quickly and we’re delighted that the feedback we have received has been so positive."

Greg's grandparents have owned the St Albans Waffle House since the 1980s, making the expansion into Harpenden the continuation of a family affair.

So, why should people visit?

Greg says: "We have been overwhelmed by the welcome we have received in Harpenden and our team are really excited to share our amazing waffles with you.

"There is something to please everyone, sweet or savoury and our restaurant is fully licensed. We cater for a range of diary requirements and even offer gluten, dairy free and vegan waffles!"

The Waffle House is currently open from 9am to 9pm, Wednesday to Saturday and until 7pm on Sunday's, with plans to open seven days a week later this year.
