The St Albans branch of CTD tiles has closed its doors after the chain fell into administration.

Fifty-six of the tile supplier's stores will permanently shut, despite a takeover from rival Topps Group rescuing some of its branches, including the store in Watford.

The closure of the branch will mean that workers at the Hatfield Road branch will be among the 268 redundancies caused by the move.

Interpath Advisory were appointed as the company's administrators following its collapse.

Interpath managing director James Lumb said that difficult market conditions proved “insurmountable” for CTD Tiles with demand not recovering as much as expected.

CTD Tiles was founded in the 1960s and had been a leader in the supplying industry before running into financial difficulty.

Topps Group has acquired the company for a fee in the region of £9m.

Its chief executive Rob Parker said: “The CTD brand and assets are an excellent fit with our existing business and the acquisition creates a new and complementary specialist tile business within the Topps Group.”

St Albans customers' nearest branch will be the Watford store.
