Firefighters have tackled a blaze at a London Colney petrol station. 

The fire began late on Tuesday night, with reports of loud explosions being heard at the Sainsbury's petrol station in Colney Fields Shopping Park.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue service were called to the scene at 10.37pm with four fire engines being deployed.

A car was found to be well alight, and crews used a mix of hose reels and larger jets to bring the fire under control and extinguish it.

The flames were put out at 10.55pm and crews remained at the scene until 11.45pm to ensure the fire was fully out.

Mark Barber, assistant chief fire officer, said: “A fire at a petrol station obviously has the potential to become extremely serious. Our firefighters did a great job rapidly containing and extinguishing the fire, and preventing this from become a more serious incident.”

The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental.

Damage was sustained to the petrol station which remained closed yesterday (August 7) following the incident.

However, a spokesperson for the Sainsbury's branch has confirmed that the station is open as normal today.
