New data has revealed that a road in Radlett ranks as the most dangerous for cyclists in Hertfordshire.
Watling Street has had five serious and 15 minor accidents in total between Elstree and St Albans, with half occurring on the stretch in Radlett.
The information comes following Freedom of Information requests sent to Hertfordshire police.
The junction of Wellfield Road and Stockbreach Road in Hatfield was the second most treacherous part of the county, with four serious cycling accidents recorded last year.
St Albans Road in Watford saw 16 minor accidents involving a person on a bicycle last year.
This placed it as the third most dangerous in the county, with the junctions to Leggatts Wood Avenue, Brixton Road and Balmoral Road emerging as collision hotspots, according to eye surgery experts OCL Vision.
Overall, the county saw 188 “slight” accidents involving cyclists in the last year, with 59 serious incidents and one fatal collision.
Masara Laginaf, consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the OCL Vision Elstree clinic, recommends that cyclists take regular eye exams, invest in the right eyewear for cycling and stay aware of their surroundings to stay safe on the road.
They should also stay hydrated to maintain their eye health and practice “good habits” such as taking breaks on long rides to avoid straining them.
