Royal Mail has confirmed that Harpenden Post Office has suspended services "until further notice", after disappointed customers were turned away.

Confusion reigned on Tuesday morning when a queue of customers were turned away from the branch, with a reader telling the Herts Ad that an employee had told them that vans were unable to access the site.

The branch is part of the WHSmiths at 29 High Street.

The employee was said to have informed disgruntled customers that the nearby Sainsburys had blocked access for vans.

Yesterday, a sign went up informing customers that the Royal Mail services would be suspended "until further notice", citing "current circumstances."

This newspaper approached Royal Mail to find out the reason for the closure.

A Post Office spokesperson said: "Harpenden Post Office has regrettably had to temporarily suspend Royal Mail collections and deliveries from the branch from Tuesday until further notice due to access issues at the rear of the premises.

"In the interim the nearest Post Office offering Royal Mail services is Southdown Road. Harpenden Post Office remains open for all other services and is still able to provide Evri, DPD and Parcelforce services.”

A further update is expected to follow.
