Sandridge Lychgate War Memorial is set to receive a £5,450 funding boost from the Grants for War Memorials scheme.

The grant, backed by Historic England, will help refurbish the memorial's honour boards, metal plaques, brick plinth, and ancient timbers, and assist in roof repairs.

The wooden honour boards are a tribute to the parish men who returned from World War I, while the metal plaques honour those who perished in both world wars.

St Leonard’s Church, Sandridge Parish Council, and residents, as well as High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Annie Brewster, have donated to the project.

"Preserving them not only ensures we continue to commemorate them but also show future generations the consequences of war and encourages them to avoid such suffering.

"The charity hopes the work will ensure its future as a focal point for commemoration.

"Anyone concerned about any other war memorials that might need help should contact the charity, or if you believe it is important to preserve our war memorial heritage please make a donation to help us protect them."
