A Harpenden primary school has been rated 'good' by Ofsted following an inspection last month.

Manland Primary School retained the score it was awarded by inspectors six years ago.

The school won praise for its culture, extra-curricular activities and approach to working with children with special educational needs (SEND).

Manland Primary prides itself on its three values of 'inspiration, aspiration and responsibility', with the report noting that those values are successfully 'embedded' in day-to-day school life.

The report says: "Pupils, including those with SEND, demonstrate highly positive attitudes towards their learning."

They garner praise for the "high expectations and clear routines" that are in place.

This contributes to an environment where children are "happy and thriving" when they come to school.

Unusually, inspectors singled out pupils' understanding of the democratic process as particularly strong.

The report points to the school having elections for house captains and its pupil parliament.

Members of this parliament have the opportunity to meet with their local MP and visit the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.

The curriculum is described as "ambitious and well designed", with a "clearly and logically" set out roadmap from Reception through to Year 6.

Pupils have a wide range of extra-curricular activities with trips and visits linked to key aspects of the curriculum, such as the Second World War and ancient Egypt.

On the development of SEND pupils, the report says: "The school is determined that pupils with SEND achieve well. Staff quickly and accurately identify individual pupils’ needs."

"They ensure that adaptations to lessons are well considered and are effective in supporting pupils’ learning. This includes using visual aids and well-considered practical resources. "

Inspectors noted that parents expressed "highly positive" views to them about the school.

The report also found the school's safeguarding arrangements to be effective.
