An 84-year-old swimming teacher in St Albans is defying age stereotypes by continuing to teach swimming classes.

Barbara Vincent, who teaches at Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre, works part-time and has "no plans to retire".

Ms Vincent's journey as a swimming teacher started in the 1980s.

She first qualified as a swimming teacher in 1986 and moved to the new centre when it opened to the public in 2012.

Originally, Ms Vincent was working in a hectic advertising role in London until she discovered her passion for teaching unexpectedly.

She said: "I originally worked in a busy office job in London, however, I had two friends who worked for a swim club that needed extra help.

"I thought to myself ‘why not’ and went to a session to have a go at helping the children - this is when I had my first taste of teaching."

After her first teaching session, Ms Vincent was inspired to pursue opportunities to teach full-time.

She said: "At this time, my three sons were at Verulam School in St Albans and were having regular swimming lessons at the school pool.

"They encouraged me to pursue my newfound passion – which I did."

Shortly after, Ms Vincent began teaching at Westminster Lodge, helping around 130 people a week become more confident swimmers.

She said: "We have always ensured our classes are inclusive.

"For me, the best part of the job is watching the young children progress."

Ms Vincent remains committed to her role as a swimming teacher.

She said: "Doing regular exercise and keeping my mind stimulated means even though I’m now 84 years old, I still have no plans to retire."

Hollie Burke, swim manager at Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre, hailed Ms Vincent as "an incredibly passionate teacher".

She said: "(Ms Vincent) absolutely epitomises the phrase 'age is just a number' and is arguably one of our most active teachers on the poolside."

Chris Traill, strategic director for community and place delivery for St Albans City and District Council, praised Ms Vincent's role in the community.

He said: "Barbara is a marvel and an inspiration to us all.

"She is a true community hero who helps make Westminster Lodge a very special leisure centre."
