The trader installed scaffolding but did not return, and requested additional payment to remove the scaffolding.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "Trading Standards experts advise you should decline to engage with tradespeople who knock on doors to find work.

"If any neighbours, particularly older or more vulnerable residents in your road, are having work done on their roof or gutters please be neighbourly and check if they're happy with the situation.

"If you can help yourself, a friend / family member or a neighbour be protected against scams by a rogue trader you might save losing thousands of pounds and much anxiety."

Incidents can be reported via the police's non-emergency number 101, or by contacting Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133.
