St Albans City & District Council's draft Local Plan includes a number of areas that could be "released from the Green Belt" if the plan were to go ahead.

The local authority must find land for 15,000 new homes to constucted over the next 17 years.

The leader of the council Chris White challenged this requirement in a letter to the Secretary of State, arguing the figure "should be much lower".

The leader told The Herts Advertiser: "It is wrong to suggest that we should ignore Government policy requiring us to allow for 15,000 houses to be built in the district over the next 17 years.

"The Ministerial response was quite clear that the Government’s policy stood."
