Plans have been submitted for an "excellent" upgrade to Redbourn Recreation Centre.

The Dunstable Road location could be set to receive four new squash courts, featuring movable walls to allow for different uses of the rooms.

A four-court multi-sports hall is also included in the plans, which will be suitable for a range of activities.

A new exercise room would also accommodate exercise classes including yoga, Pilates and spin.

New covered paddle tennis courts would also sit alongside a repositioned grass cricket square.

A full-sized floodlit 3G football pitch would host training and matches for all age groups.

The anticipated increase in the centre's usage would be solved by 90 more spaces in a new car park at the location.

A "small number" of residential homes on Dunstable Road and Blackhorse Lane would be created, in order to help fund the new facilities.

The plans are being proposed by the Redbourn Recreation Centre & Playing Fields Trust and Harpenden-based Jarvis Homes.

Chris Renwick, chair of the Redbourn Recreation Centre & Playing Fields Trust, said: "We are really pleased to have now submitted our application to extend the facilities at our recreation centre in Redbourn.

"It was important for us to take our time to design these changes and take on board the feedback from our local residents and community so that we can deliver a set of new and exciting leisure activities and ensure the future viability of the centre.”

Cllr David Mitchell, chairman of Redbourn Parish Council and ward councillor for Redbourn ward at St Albans City & District Council, added: “Redbourn Parish Council is very happy to support this project.

"It will provide Redbourn residents with some excellent new sporting facilities.”

Not all residents are pleased about the plans, with on Dunstable Road resident stating: "The existing car parking area is woefully inadequate for existing purposes and the surplus vehicles already spill out onto surrounding roads and grass verges, presenting real obstacles to enraged visitors/residents and endangering the safe passage of children and pedestrians.

"Clearly the risk of serious injury and even death will rise unless the on-site provision of additional spaces is increased significantly."
