A number of community radio stations that have previously been "restricted by the lack of FM frequencies", have banded together to apply for a licence that would allow them to broadcast digitally.

'Hertfordshire Digital Broadcasting' has brought Clive Glover, founder of St Albans' MIX92.6 (formerly known as Radio Verulam), Radio Dacorum, Borehamwood and Elstree Community Radio and a number of other local stations together.

The group are set to apply for a Small Scale Digital Audio Broadcasting Multiplex Licence, that would allow them to broadcast via DAB.

MIX92.6 itself, and Watford-based radio station Vibe, will be making separate applications.

However, according to Clive Glover, if any of the stations are successful they will "offer carriage for everyone on their network".

Mr Glover said: "Community radio in Hertfordshire has been restricted by the lack of FM frequencies so SSDAB brings the opportunity for other radio groups currently online only to get onto the airwaves locally in future.

"We are talking to a number of other local organisations interested in starting new radio services so we hope that there could be as many as eight local services on air by the time we go live on SSDAB in 2025.

"In addition there will be another 12 or more specialist services from around the country interested in broadcasting to the half a million people across South Hertfordshire."
