Theatre lovers are invited to mark their calendars as the award-winning Harpenden Musical Theatre Company brings Follies to the stage.

Written by James Goldman with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Follies tells the story of a group of former showgirls who reunite for a one-night-only performance at their old Broadway theatre, which is about to be demolished.

As the characters reminisce about their past glories, they are forced to confront the harsh realities of their present lives and the choices they have made.

The play promises a night of dazzling performances and unforgettable music, along with humour and heartbreak - including hits like 'Broadway Baby', 'I'm Still Here' and 'Losing My Mind'.

Follies has been described as a masterclass in musical theatre, and a "poignant and ultimately uplifting exploration of the power of friendship and the magic of theatre".

The musical also treats its audiences to an array of thrilling tap, jazz and showgirl dance numbers.

This production will feature a talented case of local performers, and is directed by Linda Dyne, with Mike Payne as musical director and Jason Allen Lane as choreographer.

Linda said: "Follies is a true masterpiece of the American musical theatre, and we are thrilled to be bringing it to the stage.

"We can't wait for audiences to experience the beauty, heart and humour of this unforgettable show."

Follies was first performed in 1971, and features the characters of the former showgirls performing musical numbers with the ghosts of their younger selves from the interwar period.

The score offers a pastiche of musical styles from the 1920s and 1930s, to evoke a nostalgic tone.

The original musical was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, and won seven in total.

Harpenden Musical Theatre Company has been producing two shows a year in the town for nearly 70 years.

Follies will run for five performances at the Eric Morecambe Centre in Harpenden, from Wednesday, March 29 to Saturday, April 1.

Evening performances start at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinée at 2.30pm.
