Buskers in St Albans may have to adhere to separate codes of conduct for market and non-market days in the City.
A proposal by St Albans City and District Council would mean that buskers are not permitted to play music or sing above the level of "ambient street noise" on non-market days.

This is different from the current code of conduct, which states that buskers should "make sure that music or voice is played at a level just above the ambient street noise", regardless of whether it is a market day.
If the proposed changes are made, buskers would now only be able to perform between 10am and 5pm on non-market days, over a maximum of three hours.
Performances would need to last around 20 minutes, followed by a ten minute break.
Buskers would also not be able to return to the same location within three hours of their performance ending.
The proposed code of conduct for busking on market days would ensure that buskers introduce themselves to traders in the vicinity of their performance.
The draft code of conduct for busking on market days also states: "The Markets Team will determine the acceptable level of volume of all performances.
"Please comply with any requests made by the Market Team to reduce the volume or end the performance."
