IMPROVEMENTS have been made to the household waste recycling centre in St Albans in a bid to revitalise the recycling ethos of the district.
As well as expanding the site and improving accessibility, the joint venture between Herts county council and St Albans district council has resulted in the opening of a Re-Use shop at the site on St Albans Road.
Terry Douris, the county council’s cabinet member for waste management opened the new feature at an event attended by St Albans Mayor, Cllr Annie Brewster.
He said: “Re-Use shops collect unwanted, quality items which would otherwise go to landfill. They are a great idea and I’m delighted that it is one of the many improvements to the Household Waste Recycling Centre in St Albans.”
The items, such as electrical goods and upholstered furniture, will be sold on to residents with all the proceeds going towards charity.
The expansion and redevelopment of the recycling centre is also intended to improve the capacity of the site, allowing easier access to containers and better management of incoming and outgoing traffic.
