A support group for cerebral palsy sufferers and their families has celebrated its 60th birthday.

Celebrations were in order for St Albans-based StarScope, in Pondfield Crescent, with special guests, St Albans Mayor Salih Gaygusuz and Harpenden Deputy Mayor, Nicola Lincacre in attendance.

The charity was set up in 1955 by a group of parents of children with the condition.

Trustee Sue Bird, who has been involved with the group for close to 25 years, said: “We had a lovely lunch with around 35 people of all ages and a mixture of sufferers and parents of young children who were at school.

“We are there for people who need us and can offer support to parents and relatives, for example putting the parents of a newly-diagnosed child in touch with other parents.

“We also do fundraising so we can give grants for equipment and coffee mornings and campaign for different services.”
