Robert Davey is a resident of the road, which runs from St Albans to Sandridge.

He told The Herts Advertiser: "Sadly, I am having to write to our publicly elected authorities yet again due to another car crash on St. Albans Road, that we as local residents have long predicted happening...

"...Fortunately, this time there were no fatalities in the vehicles and even more fortunately no pedestrians were walking on the pavement at the time - you will note how close two cars are to the pavement.

"Does it take the killing of a family of people walking on the pavement, enjoying a Sunday afternoon stroll, for anyone in public office to take notice and do something about this."

The Herts Advertiser has previously backed a call for vital safety improvements on the route, and a St Albans Road Safety Campaign has been pushing for safety improvements.

Mr Davey continued, speaking of how residents have been suggesting improvements to the road, said: "As a collective the residents have been lobbying and meeting with councillors, members of parliament, police commissioners and officers to try and make the sensible change to 20mph, introduce safety road markings, signs, crossings and speed cameras. All of which haven't happened.

"If it's all about money, which sadly I think it is, how much does it cost to call out an air ambulance, and all the emergency services with their vehicles and human resource?"

When asked about the road, a spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council said: "Hertfordshire County Council takes highway safety extremely seriously and works closely with the police to improve road safety in the county.

"We are aware of the incidents along this route, which the police will investigate, including whether the highway was a contributory factor, and will involve the county council in that process.”
